About Readability Score Checker
The Readability Score Checker estimates how easy your writing is to read using two classic formulas: Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. It highlights text that may be too dense for its audience, whether that is a blog post, help article or email.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the input panel.
- Read the Reading Ease score, its label from Very Easy to Very Confusing, and the approximate grade level.
- Shorten long sentences and swap long words for simpler ones, then check again.
Good to know
- Reading Ease runs roughly from 0 to 100, and higher is easier. Scores of 60 to 70 suit most general audiences.
- The grade level estimates the US school grade needed to understand the text comfortably.
- Both formulas are based on sentence length and syllables per word, so they cannot judge clarity, structure or tone.
Common questions
What score should web content have?
Most web writing aims for a Reading Ease of 60 or above, roughly an eighth- or ninth-grade level. Technical content for experts can reasonably score lower.
How can I improve my score quickly?
Split long sentences in two and replace long words with shorter everyday ones. Those two changes have the biggest effect on both formulas.
