About Word & Character Counter
The Word & Character Counter gives you instant statistics for any block of text: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time. Writers, students and marketers use it to hit length limits for essays, articles, bios and ad copy.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the input panel.
- Read the counts in the output panel. They update as you type.
- Use Clear to start again with a new piece of text.
Good to know
- Reading time assumes an average pace of 200 words per minute and is always at least one minute.
- Paragraphs are counted as blocks of text separated by a blank line.
- Sentence counts rely on end punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations can occasionally add an extra sentence.
- Your text is processed in your browser and is never sent to a server.
Common questions
Do character limits on social platforms count spaces?
Most do. Use the "with spaces" figure for them. For platforms with special rules, such as X counting links as a fixed length, use the Post Character Counter in the Social Media Tools kit.
How long is a 1,000-word article to read?
At 200 words per minute, about five minutes.
