About Compress Image
Compress Image re-encodes a photo or graphic at a lower quality setting to cut its file size. Smaller images load faster on websites, fit under email and upload limits, and take up less storage, often with little visible difference.
How to use it
- Add an image using the file picker or by dragging it in.
- Choose an output format: JPEG or WebP.
- Adjust the Quality slider. The default of 80 is a good balance for most photos.
- Click Generate, compare the original and compressed sizes, and download the result.
Good to know
- Lower quality values give smaller files but can introduce blurring and blocky artifacts. Try a few values and keep the smallest one that still looks right.
- JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. To keep a transparent background, choose WebP instead.
- WebP usually produces smaller files than JPEG at similar visual quality and is supported by all modern browsers.
- Your image is processed by your browser on your own device. It is never uploaded to a server.
Common questions
What quality setting should I use?
For photos on the web, 70 to 85 is a sensible range. Go lower for thumbnails where detail matters less, and higher for images people will zoom into.
Why is the compressed file bigger than my original?
If the original was already heavily compressed, re-encoding it at a high quality setting can add data. Lower the quality or keep the original.
