About Tip Calculator
The Tip Calculator works out the tip on a bill, the total to pay, and how much each person owes when the bill is split. It saves mental arithmetic at the table and makes sharing the cost fair.
How to use it
- Enter the bill amount.
- Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
- Enter the number of people splitting the bill, or leave it at 1.
- Read the tip, the total and the amount per person.
Good to know
- The tip is calculated on the amount you enter. If you prefer to tip on the pre-tax total, enter the bill before tax.
- Customary tip rates vary by country and service. Check local norms when traveling.
- Per-person amounts are shown to the cent, so the parts may differ from the total by a cent or two after rounding.
Common questions
How do I split unevenly?
This tool splits the bill equally. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share separately using their portion of the bill.
Should the tip be based on the total before or after tax?
Both are common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional in many places, but either is acceptable.
