About Percentage Calculator

The Percentage Calculator handles the three percentage questions people ask most often: what is X percent of Y, what percent is X of Y, and by what percentage did a value change. It is useful for discounts, test scores, budgets, price changes and growth figures.

How to use it

  1. Choose a mode: X% of Y, X is what % of Y, or % change.
  2. Enter the two values.
  3. Read the answer in the output panel as soon as both fields are filled in.

Good to know

  • X% of Y answers questions like "what is 20% of 150", which gives 30.
  • X is what % of Y answers questions like "30 is what percent of 150", which gives 20%.
  • % change compares a starting value X with a new value Y. A rise from 50 to 75 is a 50% increase. A change from zero cannot be expressed as a percentage, so the tool reports an error in that case.

Common questions

How do I work out a discounted price?

Use X% of Y to find the discount amount, then subtract it from the original price. For 25% off 80, the discount is 20, so the sale price is 60.

Why is a 50% drop followed by a 50% rise not back to the start?

Each percentage applies to a different base. 100 falls by 50% to 50, and a 50% rise on 50 only adds 25, giving 75.
