About SHA-256 Hash Generator

SHA-256 turns any input into a fixed 64-character hexadecimal digest. The same input always gives the same digest, while even a one-character change produces a completely different one. This tool hashes text and can compare the result against a digest you already have.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the text you want to hash.
  2. Read the 64-character digest in the output panel.
  3. Optionally paste an expected digest into the comparison field to see whether it matches.

Good to know

  • The comparison shows Matches or Does not match, which is a quick way to confirm that a value has not changed.
  • Hashing is one-way: a digest cannot be turned back into the original text.
  • Whitespace counts. A trailing space or newline produces a different digest, which is a frequent cause of unexpected mismatches.

Common questions

Is SHA-256 safe for storing passwords?

Not on its own. Password storage should use a slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2. SHA-256 is fast by design, which suits checksums and integrity checks rather than passwords.

Does this hash files?

This tool hashes text that you type or paste. It computes the digest in your browser using the Web Crypto API.
